What cropping an image actually does
Cropping removes pixels from the outside of a picture. You are choosing a smaller rectangle inside the original and throwing away everything else. That is different from resizing, which scales the whole image up or down without cutting anything. Crop changes what is in the frame. Resize changes how big the frame is. You often do both: crop first to get the right composition, then resize for the final dimensions.

Crop to a selection or a fixed aspect ratio
You can crop in two ways. A free selection lets you drag any rectangle you like, which is best when you just want to trim or reframe by eye. A fixed aspect ratio locks the shape of the box so the proportions stay correct no matter how you drag it. That is what you want for predictable output:
- 1:1 for square avatars and many social grids.
- 16:9 for video thumbnails and wide banners.
- 4:3 for classic photo framing and slides.
Locking the ratio means you never end up with a slightly-off square or a banner that gets squished when it loads on the page.
Crop an image in three steps
