A Shopify product CSV is the fastest way to load many products at once instead of adding them one by one. The hard part is getting the columns exactly right, because Shopify expects specific headers in a specific order. Here is how to build a clean import file and what each column does.
What a Shopify product CSV needs
Shopify reads a fixed set of columns when you import products. The ones that matter most are:
- Handle: the unique key that ties variant rows of one product together.
- Title: the product name.
- Body (HTML): the product description, with HTML allowed.
- Vendor, Product Category, Type, Tags: the classification fields.
- Published: whether the product goes live.
- Option1 Name and Option1 Value: variant options like Size or Color.
- Variant SKU, Variant Price, Variant Inventory Qty: the stock and pricing details.
- Image Src: a URL to the product image.
The Handle is the piece people miss. Every variant of one product shares the same Handle across multiple rows, which is how Shopify groups them into a single listing.
Build the file without touching a spreadsheet
Hand-editing CSV columns is where imports break. A missing header or a shifted column means Shopify rejects the file. The Shopify Product CSV Generator gives you a form for each product and writes the correct headers for you.
- Open the Shopify Product CSV Generator.
- Add each product with its title, description, vendor, type, and tags.
- Fill in variant details: SKU, price, and inventory quantity per option.
- Click download to get a Shopify-ready CSV with the columns in the right order.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so your product data and pricing never leave your device.
Import it into Shopify
Once you have the file, the upload takes a minute:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products, then click Import.
- Choose your downloaded CSV file.
- Review the preview Shopify shows you and confirm the import.
Shopify matches each row by Handle, so variants land under the right product automatically. If something looks off, fix the row in the generator and re-export rather than editing the raw file.
